Disadvantages of GMO's

Some of the disadvantages of GMO's are that it may cause medical problems for humans, they also effect organisms in the ecosystem which can lead to loss in crops and biodiversity. This article further explains the disadvantages and how it effects everyone.

A company called Monsanto is controlling genetically engineered crops.  They control about 90 percent of them and have turned it into a corporate monopoly. Once GMOs are released into the open they can’t be controlled like they were in the lab. If the GMO gene goes into a neighboring crop that doesn’t contain GMOs, the modified gene will contaminate the natural crop.  This Monsanto makes farmers dependent on their GMO seeds. The GMO seeds also contain herbicides and pesticides, but animals can evolve and adapt to these chemicals in turn making more powerful chemicals in future GMO seeds.  These crops also contaminate the soil.  The Monsanto monopoly control is very unfair in my opinion.  They control 90 percent that is almost a 100.  America is all about equal opportunity and with Monsanto controlling almost all the GMO business there is not much room for competition.

Labeling GMOs

http://www.non-gmoreport.com/articles/millenium/fdadisallowsgmo-freelabel.php

The FDA rejected the idea for labeling foods that contain GMOs, even though the public wants companies to label them.  This is very strange to think about, because this raises the question, "What is the FDA trying to hide from us, the consumers?"  There are also some companies that want to advertize that their food product doesn’t contain and GMOs, but the FDA won’t allow that either.  The U.S.-European biotechnology committee is insisting that the FDA strengthens their regulations on labeling food products about GMOs.

Is The FDA Doing Their Job?

The government and the FDA should be the ones that protect us, the citizens, from any harm or dangerous chemicals that could be put in our food.  It is the job of the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration, to test and check these things out.  They are allowing bugs in our food and genetically engineered food products to be sold to us without our knowledge.  At least tell us which food contains GMOs.  I believe that the government has been lying to us about a lot of other things rather than just food.  I understand that by using these GMOs we can feed a lot more people, but we are not doing that. Americans waste nearly half of the food that we eat.  It is a crazy phenomenon, but scientists that are engineering these GMOs need to work out all the kinks before the time comes that we need to feed 9 billion people on the planet.

ARE GMOs SAFE?

http://www.newsmaxhealth.com/headline_health/genetically_modified_food/2010/01/15/308880.html

GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are in most of our foods. About 65 percent of the food on supermarket shelves contains at least one GMO.  At this time there is not an easy way to tell if your food contains GMOs.  A poll done by CBS showed that 53 percent of Americans would buy a food product if they knew it had a GMO in it. The U.S. has no law stating that food products need to be labeled even though Americans would prefer food to be labeled. Countries like Japan, China, Australia, New Zealand, and some parts of Europe require food products to be labeled. There was a study conducted by Russian scientists on GMOs and feeding them to rats.  The study showed that a female rat that was fed genetically modified soy flour, before, during, and after pregnancy ended up dying within three weeks.  Also another study has shown rats that were fed GMO corn had signs of liver and kidney problems.  I think this is crazy, because there are scientifically engineered foods that we are currently eating.  For example, scientists in white coats in a laboratory came up with a way to create an artificial ingredient that is put in the food that we eat.

This graph shows how many acres are being consumed by genetically modified crops.  For example, in 1996 only five percent of HT Soybeans were being planted compared with 2010 where nearly 95 percent are HT Soybeans.  You can see how it just keeps growing and growing.

This pie chart is showing how people feel about GMOs.  It is clear that a lot of people don't agree with foods being modified.  However, it seems like no one does anything about it, because the number of genetically modifying foods is still growing.

What are we going to do about the 9 billion people on Earth?

24-billion-extra-people-no-more-land-how-will-we-feed-the-world-in-2050

The link above is an article about what we are going to do when there is about 9 billion people living on Earth.  I was trying to figure out if GMOs were going to take a leading role in how we are going to feed everyone, or if getting rid of GMOs would be the solution.  The article is saying how all the best scientific technology out there should be used to fix this problem.  They mention that they want to educate the public more about GMOs and view it from a positive point of view on how they can contribute to feeding the growing population.

Many people don't understand what genetically modified food is.  Since the mid 1990’s the U.S. has increasingly planted more GM crops than any other country.  As of 2008 the US was growing about 62.5 million hectares or approximately 154 million acres of GM crops. Keeping in mind that one hectare equals 2.471 acres.
